and hopefully now I'm back.

...I'm exposed

And it's no big surprise
Don't you think I know
Exactly where I stand
This world is forcing me
To hold your hand
'Cause I'm just a girl, little 'ol me
Don't let me out of your sight
I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights

Oh...I've had it up to here!
The moment that I step outside
So many reasons
For me to run and hide
I can't do the little things I hold so dear
'Cause it's all those little things
That I fear

'Cause I'm just a girl I'd rather not be
'Cause they won't let me drive
Late at night I'm just a girl,
Guess I'm some kind of freak
'Cause they all sit and stare
With their eyes

I'm just a girl,
Take a good look at me
Just your typical prototype

Oh...I've had it up to here!
Oh...am I making myself clear?
I'm just a girl
I'm just a girl in the world...
That's all that you'll let me be!
I'm just a girl, living in captivity
Your rule of thumb
Makes me worry some

I'm just a girl, what's my destiny?
What I've succumbed to Is making me numb
I'm just a girl, my apologies
What I've become is so burdensome
I'm just a girl, lucky me
Twiddle-dum there's no comparison

Oh...I've had it up to!
Oh...I've had it up to!!
Oh...I've had it up to here!

Again. Ahem.

This is just glitter polish perfection. Different sized glitters and a subtle peach tint give you a finish that sparkles without going all disco ball. I'm not 20 anymore (sob!) i can't really rock a blue glitter manicure on an average day without it looking OTT. But this, this is something else. It's not garish, it's not in your face but it is bold enough to command attention.

I find myself wanting to dig out every pale pink, peach, beige or even black polish I have just to see how this would look over them.

This is swoon inducing.

It has a nice wide brush but it took 4 coats before it was opaque. With one coat it really was like jade, it had the same creamy transparency and in all honesty I quite liked it and wanted to leave it like that! But that would probably have looked a little odd so I kept building up the coverage. Overall I would say this is nice but that's about it. It's not a must have. I don't think you need to run out and buy this.

What polishes are you wearing these days?

Bourjois have clearly been taking lessons in naming nail polishes in the footseps of Essie and OPI. This is God Save the Green, a beautiful neutral green

It makes me think of Wuthering Heights and Gone with the Wind. Don't ask me why. It just does.

If you like to slap on red and green polishes as soon as December hits this is worth looking at and going and swatching a Boots tester. It has a brilliantly wide fan brush which makes application effortless, even for clumsy people like me.

This was opaque in just ONE coat on my mini nails so those with normal sized nail beds may require two coats :)

Despite being a lover of soft neutral lipsticks every now and then I have a flirtation with something that has a little more muscle. Here is Bourjois's Contour Edition lipliner in Berry Much or 05 for any of you numbers people.

It's quite a stern shade, a serious demeanour is needed to pull this off. This is long lasting and does have enough oomph to stop lipstick from bleeding. It is very pigmented and does leave a slight stain in your lips when you remove it. It looks less red and more burgundy in 'real life', my amateur camera skills are clearly not up to scratch!

Why am I not showing this on my lips?? I'm having a reaction on my upper lip to something so have to be product free until the irritation subsides sob sob!

Behold! Pampelmousse (aka shade 28) in all its glory!

I know it looks intense and scary but really it's a sheep in wolf's clothing! Don't let that bright pigmented exterior fool you, Pampelmousse is a soft, sheer work appropriate shade in disguise.

I have to say it didn't last anywhere near 12 hours but I don't really mind. Even densely pigmented mattes require some lipbalm or a reapplication to get a 'just applied' finish so I wouldn't expect anything different from a subtle muted lipstick. It's not a deal breaker for me.

I pressed quite firmly here and it's not a deep dark colour. Very work friendly!

Obligatory finger swatch!

"I Bruise Easily" (Natasha Bedingfield)

My skin is like a map
Of where my heart has been
And I cant hide the marks
Its not a negative thing
So I let down my guard
Drop my defences down by my clothes
I'm learning to fall
With no safety net to cushion the blow

I bruise easily
So be gentle when you handle me
There's a mark you leave
Like a love heart carved on a tree
I bruise easily
Can't scratch the surface
Without moving me underneath
I bruise easily
I bruise easily

I bruise easily
I bruise easily

They are beautiful! They remind me of fashion illustrations from the 90s with the heavy eye make up and stylised hair.

This beautiful little shop is home to a myriad of cutting edge design. The store itself is quite lovely with maroon carpets, gold drapes, red leather sofas and a pink spotlighted ceiling! Here you will find brands such as Proenza Schouler, Issa London, Raoul, Alaia, Antonio Marras, Jo No Fui, J. Mendel, Ingie and Mua Mua.

Nida and I found Taj's Tea Parlour when we were taking our lunch break during our cake decorating class (post up shortly)

Vintage decor, bunting, and of course, cake, so how could we not make a bee line towards it?

Here is our beautiful hostess and her delicious baked goods (which include a gluten free option). She was very friendly, very welcoming and I loved her elegant dress sense.

The tea parlour is full of gorgeous, kitsch crockery and cutlery.

and has a huge selection of teas, including my favourite range, Tea pigs.

I went for the creme caramel tea and the bundt cake. The cake was beautiful. Sweet, lightly spiced and moist. Quite possibly the best bundt cake I have ever tasted. Really! I paid £6 for my tea and cake which I think is standard for this part of town. I did notice that the portion was slightly smaller than the slices that Angel Food or Bona Foodie provide.

The seating arrangement includes a variety of different styles of chairs and sofas and the mismatch aesthetic adds to the vintage feel. The velvet chesterfield-esque sofa just screams old school comfort and chic and next time I will definitely be parking myself on it. I would like to see a few cushions next time, especially near the front seats as I think that would just brighten the whole section a little.

The walls are decorated with intricate mirrors and cute vintage cards and posters. Again I would like to see a few more of these up but the Tea Parlour has only been open 5 weeks so of course it takes time to complete decor. I'm being picky really but I live for interior decor so soft furnishings and walls do always grab my thoughts.

Although this tea parlour has lots of competition within The Laines area of Brighton it does have a unique style and I can definitely see this place being a huge hit among Brighton's vintage loving crowd. Angel Food Bakery is just around the corner though and that is hugely successful so I think it would be worth increasing the cake selection to include some frosted cupcakes or layer cakes because people still love cupcakes and frosting in the South (personally I am over cupcakes and their too heavy frosting but different folks, different strokes etc). They also do workshops which I am quite interested in looking up and also host private parties and offer venue space.

I can see Taj's Tea Parlour being a real hit in Brighton and I would recommend it for a nice treat. Pop in next time you're in the area!

We have been trialling and trialling but now we found our perfect recipe for a raw vegan, gluten free chocolate and nut tart. It took a few attempts to get it 'perfect' for our palates but here we are,

Behold!

It looks a little gooey in the photo below, but it was actually more 'solid' in reality

So how did we do it? Well I wish we could take all the credit but this is also based on a recipe from Solveig Berg Vollan's amazing blog, Gluten Free Vegan Girl. We have modified it a fair bit as you can see below, because her finished result is a raw vegan devil's food cake whereas ours was very much a firm tart. Click on the recipe header below to be taken straight to her version. In brackets I have added our substitutions and below, I have explained the reasons for them.

Raw Vegan Devil’s Food Cake

makes 1 tall three-layered cake (using a 7″ pan)
Ingredients:

4 cups pitted dates

2 cups raw cashews *

2 cups raw walnuts (we changed these for almonds)

1 cup raw almond butter (we used raw organic peanut butter)

3/4 cup raw cacao powder (we used melted 90% dark chocolate, about 70g)

1 tsp vanilla extract (we skipped this)

a pinch of salt (we skipped this)

(we also added a dessert spoon of flax seeds and a dessert spoon of chia seeds)

(we also added one dessert spoon of cocoa nibs)

Directions:
1. Place the nuts in a food processor and process until they have a crumbly texture. Add in the dates and continue until you have a somewhat sticky dough. Finally add in the remaining ingredients and run until the mixture is well-combined. If your food processor is on the smaller side, I would recommend doing this in two batches. Even I whose food processor is rather large did that to ensure that the dough would be as smooth as possible.

2. Once the dough is finished, shape it into three equally large balls. Place one of them in a small 7″ springform pan, lined with parchment, and press it down very firmly using clean hands. Place it in the fridge for 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes are up and the shape has set, remove from the form and place on a cake plate (optionally with a cake placemat underneath).

Raw Vegan Chocolate Icing

makes approx. 5 cups
Ingredients:

3 cups pitted dates (we used 4 cups because we wanted spare frosting for spooning on top)

1 1/2 cup raw cashews (we used 2 cups)

2 – 3 cups water (we used 3.5 cups)

6 tbsp raw cacao powder (we used melted 90% dark chocolate_

1 tsp vanilla essence (we skipped this)

1/2 tsp salt (we skipped this too)

Directions:
1. Place all the ingredients, starting out with using 2 cups water, in a food processor and process until you have a smooth mixture. If the icing is looking a bit grainy, gradually add in another 1 cup water for a total of 2 cups. Store in the fridge until usage.

After the first layer is on the cake plate, proceed to make the icing like written below and spread an even amount all over the cake. Repeat the process in this step with the two remaining balls, stacking them on top of the first layer. Once all three layers are finished, coat the sides with icing as well.

Why did we make our substitutions?

1. We are not huge walnut fans, so switched to almonds. Almonds release a lot of oil when processed so that's something to remember. The oil which is released, will stiffen when chilled and it gave the tart a very firm texture. It was more chewy than the first version we made.
2) We had no almond butter so just switched to peanut butter. It was a great switch! But I think using hazelnut butter would be the best because perhaps there would be a nutella-esque taste to it then?
3. Ran out of cocoa powder. Our dark chocolate bar had some sugar in it so again, this is not a no-sugar version, whereas Solveig's original version is no added sugar.
4. I never use vanilla essence (only vanilla seeds which I had used up) nor salt in my sweet food cooking.

I have to say this was delicious. Just delicious. I really urge you all to check out her blog because even if you eat 'regular' food, these recipes are just fantastic. I have been eating this as an afternoon treat with a cup of hot rooibos tea and it is such a happy part of my day! The best part is that I don't have to feel guilty because although dates do have their own sugar content, this is definitely healthier than eating a shop bought calorie laden slice of cake. There is fibre in the dates, protein in the nuts, healthy omega 3 fats in the chia seeds and flax seeds and antioxidants in the cocoa nibs. So really this is a health food :p

Enjoy! I sure as hell am! x

They tasted lovely, moist, chocolatey and rich but not sugary. Just delicious! We were thrilled with them especially M, who hardly touches anything with sugar but still has a sweet tooth.

We based these on a recipe from the brilliant blog, Gluten Free Vegan Girl. Solveig is an excellent GFV cook and the recipes I've tried so far have been great. Below is her recipe and in the brackets are the changes we made.

Vegan Double Chocolate Chip Muffins (from Gluten Free Vegan Girl Blog)

makes 6 large muffins (We made 12 smaller muffins)
Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup unsweetened dairy-free milk (1. we used coconut milk)

1 1/2 cup dates

3/4 cup brown rice flour

3/4 cup buckwheat flour

1/4 cup coconut cream *

4 tbsp cocoa powder (2. we swapped cocoa powder for melted 90% dark chocolate)

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp vanilla essence (3 a) we didn't include this)

1/2 tsp maldon salt (3 b) we didn't include this)

1 cup chopped vegan chocolate/chocolate chips (4. we used half a bar of Plamil)

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius/375 degrees Fahrenheit. In
a large mixing bowl add in all the dry ingredients except for the
chocolate chips. Set this aside for now.
2. Place the coconut cream, dates,
vanilla essence and 1 cup of the milk in a high-speed blender/food
processor, and blend until you have a completely smooth and creamy
mixture. Stir this in with the dry ingredients while gradually adding in
the remaining 1/2 cup of milk. Mix until you have a thoroughly combined
cake-like batter. Stir in about 4/5 of the chocolate chips, saving
about 2 tablespoons for sprinkling on top later

3. Grab
a muffin pan (lined with muffin cups or parchment) and place on a
baking tray. Fill them to the brink with batter so when the muffins
rises they will look slightly over-flowing. I used about 3/4 cup batter
per muffin. Repeat until you have 6 equally large muffins, or until all
of the batter has been used. Sprinkle on top the remaining tablespoons
of chocolate and place the tray into the oven for 25-35 minutes, or
until a toothpick comes out clean. Transfer to a cooling rack and give
them at least 10 minutes to set before serving.

Why did we make our substitutions?
1) Once we scooped out the coconut cream from the chilled can, we just wanted to use the cocnout milk up. Yes, we could have saved it for smoothies etc but really I worry about forgetting about these things, so in it went.
2) Again, we ran out of cocoa powder but had so many bars of dark chocolate in the house. We substituted 1 tablespoon for about 10 grams of chocolate.
3) I don't use vanilla essence, preferring to bake with vanilla seeds and there were no more pods left in the cupboard, so I just skipped this. I rarely add salt to baked goods either.
4) Well we were really going for something a little indulgent. So whereas Solveig's recipe has no added sugar and is super healthy, we used a bar of Plamil vegan chocolate which has some sugar in it. We probably ended up with one small square of chocolate per muffin, which we still felt was pretty disciplined. Ultimately though, we were going for sweetness.

Excuse me, I have a muffin that needs eating NOW!

Let's be quick and put it out there. I LOVE these!

These are such a brilliant idea and are simply perfect for people like myself who are a little cack handed when it comes to nail art. These are so easy to use, so quick to apply and the effect is brilliant. I love the fact that I can have something pretty and interesting on my nails in a few minutes. The small pack contains 180 nail tattoos.

I also really like this nail polish by Bourjois. It is Tombee a Pink (shade 13) and is one of the most easy, wearable and flattering colours I have tried. In the bottle it doesn't look anything special but when it's dry it just looks effortless and chic. I'm sorry, I know I'm very boring with nail polish, opting for navy blue and pink 90% of the time but what can I say, they make me happy! The brown shade is C16 from UNE and it's a much warmer toned brown than any of the others I own. It really is a cadbury's milk chocolate sort of colour so this made me very hungry for Dairy Milk when I applied this!

If you look very very carefully you can slightly see the shiny outline of the nail tattoo below but I did apply these very quickly and to be honest who will see your nails this close up.

In this post the following products have been used; Bourjois Calligraphic Nail Tattoos, Bourjois So Laque Glossy polish in shade 13 (Tombee a Pink), Une Nail Colour in C16 (chocolate brown) and UNE Smart Nail Care hardener & strengthener. These were all sent to me for consideration of review by the relevant PRs
I received this a few weeks ago and have only just remembered to post this. Bad blogger! This is shade C04, a pastel peach shade.

Opaque in 2 medium coats (didn't have time to apply 3 thin coats, rushed as always these days!)

Orange based shades always make my knuckles look quite dark for some reason, not sure why! Even so I do like this, it's so glossy and very chic.

These polishes have a 3 in 1 format, i.e they are a base, colour and topcoat in one product. This particular colour is 78.5% of 'natural origin', make of that what you will. I find these polishes last about 2 daysbefore chipping but I wash my hands constantly and do DIY and make a lot of crafty type things with my son so my polishes always take a battering. I like the quirky bottle design for the inside lid and these are quite wallet friendly. The colour range is safe so if you lust after neon greens then you might feel underwhelmed but for classic, office appropriate shades you won't go wrong with UNE's polishes.
Unfortunately the packaging broke in transit but the eyeshadows were intact :)

What I like: the texture is very soft, they are velvety and very easy to blend and apply. The colours are pretty too.

As with many Une products they have some oeganic and natural elements to their ingredients. I think 'natural' can be an awkward word because it is thrown around so much that you have to know what the brand's definition of it is before you can really assess how beneficial it is to your skin and the environment but Une do try and make an effort and that counts for something.

What I don't like: I cant get these to work on my eyes unless I add some shimmer underneath or on top. Unfortunately pale mattes always look chalky on my yellow undertones unless I add a lot of warmth or texture. As you can see the shadow just looks very white and chalky, even on top of a primer.

If there is a dark brown version of this trio then I might hunt for it in Boots and have a look at the tester because I do like the texture and I might get more use out of those colours.
